The paper “The End of Humanity: Elegiac rather than Apocalyptic” explores the treatment of the end of the world as a gradual process that focuses on rebirth and transformation rather than the violent ending and revelation of Abrahamic religions or the nihilism of technological disasters. The writing of these stories occur against the backdrop of a declining population in Japan.
The paper was originally presented at the Mechademia conference in September 2014. Mechademia conferences (http://www.mechademia.net) are held annually at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and biennially in Asia.
